THE annual Tintagel Carnival ‘Fancy Dress Wheelbarrow Races’ were held on a very rainy day.

On Saturday, July 29, the village was drenched with Cornish liquid sunshine but the racing continued regardless.

The evening’s racing started with the Under 12s race, the competitors raced around the Mayfair Car Park performing tasks as they ran — including zig zag poles, apple bobbing and star jumping, followed by a complete circuit at full speed.

The damp crowd cheered the participants over the finish line.

Then came the big race of the evening, the Over 18s race. Seven teams entered the field squelching for position at the start at Tintagel Visitors Centre.

The field dashed to the first refreshment stop at the Tintagel Arms, then on to the Cornishman, Wootons Hotel, turn and drink at the old Country Club Car Park.

Further refreshment was taken at the Malt House and finally the King Arthur Arms with a final mad dash to the finish at Trevena Square.

A very exciting men’s race was won by Andy and Ed as the ‘tortoise and hare’, followed by Adam and Oli as the ‘Chavs’ and third place went to Richard and Shane as ‘Pokemon Go’ characters. Richard and Shane also won the best fancy dress wheelbarrow price.

After the race Phil Aston, of Tintagel Carnival committee, said: “What a fantastic, if very damp, evening! A big thank you to all the entrants, committee members and supporters for organising the evening, the local village pubs for helping with refreshments and all the people who braved the Cornish summer conditions to line Fore Street encouraging the runners and helping raise money for carnival funds.”
