A MADHATTERS tea party was held at the Summerhouse next to the local church at Widemouth Bay recently to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care.
On an overcast day, around 30 or 40 people raised over £400 for the charity which has just completed its 21st year, having been started by Jean Corn whose father died in St Austell Hospice back in February 1995.
During the day there was the usual goings on with a selection of cakes and scones on offer to accompany the tea and coffee.
The prize for the maddest hat was won by Pat Griffiths, who was awarded a bottle of Prosecco while a raffle was also held.
Gazebos and tables were also set up in and out of the summerhouse, but with the weather on the chilly side, most decided to sit inside.
Ms Corn, who still has a very active role in the charity despite being 85, was quite pleased with the day, she said: “It was a lovely day and we managed to earn over £400 which was extremely good. If the weather was better I suspect we’d have earned quite a bit more as more people would have turned up but the Hospice were pleased with how it all went.”
