BUDE’S newest drama group, Bude Independent Theatre Society (BITS), continued to attract fresh interest as it held its inaugural meeting for members at the Parkhouse Centre in Bude on June 28.

Despite unpleasant weather conditions, a strong contingent of amateur theatre enthusiasts turned out to sign up for membership of BITS and to hear more about plans for the new group and its first public presentation.

BITS plans to stage its first production at The Parkhouse on November 3 and 4. This will be a variety show consisting of sketches or short plays, singing and dancing. Casting is already under way with rehearsals set to begin today (July 13).

One of the production’s directors, Matt Long, told the meeting that the variety show committee is looking to BITS members to put forward their ideas for the show. “We are anxious to include as many people as possible and we really want to hear your ideas and see any material you may have written,” he told the meeting.

“We also want to hear from members who have skills and experience in all the backstage areas such as lighting, sound, sets, wardrobe, make-up and stage management, as well as those interested in helping with publicity, social media and front of house,” he added.

Welcoming everyone to the meeting, steering committee members Jim Buck and Lynda Savory outlined plans for the Society’s non-production activities. A general meeting is to be held at least once a month, in addition to any current production rehearsals. Theatre workshops, improv sessions and short plays are all on the agenda. Members were again urged to share their thoughts with the steering committee on what they would like to see happening at these meetings.

“We are also really keen to see young people joining and taking part in our productions,” they said. “Anyone who is interested, even without any prior experience, can come along and learn about theatrical production in all its forms. We will teach you how to do everything.”

The meeting concluded with refreshments as new members signed up and spoke to the variety show directors about their individual talents.
