THE former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, attended St Endellion Church for a study day on Saturday.
Despite wind and rain many people attended the the day. Dr Williams spoke on the subject of ‘Faith in fiction: some modern British and American writers’.
He gave an informative talk for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon, with an opportunity for questions afterwards.
He mentioned writers such as Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, Rose McCauley, John Updike, Marilyn Robinson, Flannery O’Connor, Anita Maine, Thomas Kenneally, Iris Murdoch, Robert Graves and H M Preston.
Dr Williams was welcomed, introduced and thanked by Prebendary Judith Pollinger, who had arranged the day through Endelienta, the North Cornwall Arts and Spirituality charity based at St Endellion.
The day was made a success by the help of Frances Kent and Jill O’Grady, churchwardens, Jane Trayhurn, Jennie Godwin, Sue Foster, Tom Warne and David Foster.
The following day, and the Sunday before Lent, Dr Williams preached to a large congregation in St Minver Parish Church.
Prebendary and priest-in-charge Elizabeth Wild welcomed Dr Williams and his wife, Jane, who is also a leading theologian, to St Minver Parish Church.
The church bells were rung before the service and accompanying music was played by organist Gill Gowan.
The reader was Martin Broadfoot and Jill Gompertz offered prayers of intercession. A letter from the Bishop of Truro was read out, asking people in 2016 to share the stories of how they came to faith or how their faith was deepened.
