FLY TIPPING in and around the Launceston area is on the increase, according to a town councillor.

At the council meeting on December 19, speaking to the leader of Cornwall Council, Adam Paynter, who is also Liberal Democrat ward member for Launceston North and North Petherwin, town councillor Brian Keighley said: “Fly tipping is on the increase.

“I know a gentleman who took some rubbish to the tip and wasn’t allowed to tip it. He had to go home, transfer his vehicle and take it out.

“There’s such a restriction on what they can take and can’t take.”

Cllr Paynter said the local authority ‘doesn’t have a duty to dispose of commercial waste’, but Cllr Keighley confirmed it was household waste the gentleman was trying to dispose of, adding that he was told ‘his van wasn’t registered’.

Cllr Paynter added: “It’s really difficult when people in rural areas often have one vehicle and it’s a multi-use vehicle they use for everything.

“It’s frustrating and I understand why people are concerned about it.”
