A pupil of St Joseph's School, Launceston, has won £500 for her school in a national competition, by demonstrating her knowledge of the importance of getting your 'five-a-day'.
Eight-year-old Florence Scard-Morgan, a Year 4 pupil, together with her classmates, was invited to enter the 'Eat Healthy, Live Healthy' competition, a national initiative run by JDP, a leading building industry stockist, which has a local branch in Launceston.
The competition focused on healthy living, promoting the benefits to the youngsters who took part of a good diet and getting their 'five-a-day', as well as exercise and physical wellbeing in boosting confidence and having a positive outlook.
The children's task set by JDP was to design or make a plate of 'fake' food, which they thought best represented a balanced meal and could help to achieve their five-a-day target.
Jim Brown, JDP regional manager, said: "Fruit and vegetables are an important part of a balanced diet, which provide minerals, vitamins and fibres and help to maintain a healthy weight and heart.
"We wanted to work with schools through this year's competition to promote the five-a-day message in a fun but informative way, and give some handy hints and tips to get them eating a wide variety of fresh fruit and veg without having to give up the things they love too!"
