“Thank you so much for coming to visit us” said Launceston Mayor, Cllr Leighton Penhale in welcoming Mayor Christian Jeffroy, President Bruno Philippe and 41 friends from the twin town Plestin-les-Greves — sentiments concurred by families on both sides of the channel in this first exchange since 2019.

Thirty-two adults and 11 children arrived late on Saturday evening, met by their jubilant English hosts. Sunday was a free day spent with families and in the evening everyone went to Trethorne Leisure Farm.

In their speeches, translated by Cherry Warne, both Mayors and Presidents expressed the same delighted sentiments that twinning exchanges had recommenced. Launceston President, Jason Thorns, remembering also those who were still unable to travel for various reasons.

On behalf of the town of Plestin, Christian presented a gift to Cllr Penhale and the Launceston Town Council. Bruno then presented Jason and Leighton with a specially designed flag each – half Breton and half Cornish – with the wish that one day it may fly from the castle! Following a very tasty meal there was an informal time of dancing and catching up with old friends.

On Monday, around 80 twinners enjoyed the experience of the Bodmin Jail attraction and ate lunch together in their restaurant. After a short time back with the family it was time to say farewell as our Breton friends left to take the overnight ferry from Plymouth. A short but thoroughly enjoyable visit with everyone looking forward to meeting again in Plestin in 2023.
