A 35-YEAR-OLD horse was rescued by crews from Hatherleigh and Holsworthy Fire Stations and a special rescue team from Camels Head on January 25 after it became stuck in a boggy field near Shebbear.

At 11.36am crews attended the site, along with a vet who assisted with the animal, providing sedation before the operation began.

It had been decided that due to the extremely boggy conditions the horse would be dragged on a sheet to a nearby field in order to minimise the risk to the horse and crews.

Crews managed to drag the 35-year-old horse from the boggy section of the field by using special rescue equipment and, once on firmer ground, a local farmer’s tractor hoist was used to lift the horse to its feet.

The vet was then able to check the horse over and the duty of care was passed over to them.
