FIREFIGHTERS worked through the night on Sunday, through to Monday morning, tackling a serious fire at the former Camelford Primary School on Highfield Road.

The building has been derelict for some time, ever since the primary school relocated to new premises on the site of Sir James Smith's Community School on Dark Lane.

There have been numerous reports previously of young people on the premises, causing damage.

At the last meeting of Camelford Town Council, local police officer PC Steve Stoppard attended and raised concern at the 'open-ness' of the site.

He said a lack of security allowed youngsters to access the school grounds and site, which is owned by Cornwall Council.

There has been a lot of discussion about the future of the site. The town council and a number of local residents hoped the site would remain as green space or become the location for a new medical centre.

However, Tesco has shown interest in building a small food store there, despite opposition faced by some residents.

Many former pupils of Camelford Primary School were saddened to hear the news of the fire, as the building held many fond memories for them.

Others, communicating through the social media network, Facebook were outraged at the possibility that the fire could have been arson.
