A PLAY commemorating the centenary of the First World War is being supported with a cheque for £2,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme.
Callington Town Band applied for a grant from the scheme to raise money for their community play, ‘And Some Came Home’, which was performed at Callington Town Hall on October 26 and 27.
Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags in Tesco stores awarded to thousands of local community projects every year.
Since launching in 2015, it has provided more than £56-million to more than 16,000 local community projects.
Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions are awarded funding.
Shirley Morse, secretary at Callington Town Band, said: “We are delighted to have received this grant which allows us to put on this very special production to mark the centenary.
“Thank you very much to Tesco customers from Callington for taking the time to vote for our project.”
Carrie-Ann Bailey, Community Champion at Callington Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. It’s great to see projects like this come to life.”
Groundwork’s national chief executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down the UK to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.”
