The St Giles Women’s Guild held its Summer fete recently in aid of North Devon Hospice.

The fete was opened by Jadeen Lowe and Erin West, community and events fundraisers for the hospice.

After a short talk about the hospice they were both presented with flowers by four year old Oliver Ponting, whose grandmother Linda Banbury made the beautiful corsages.

There were many different stalls selling: home-made cakes and preserves, plants, books and bric-a-brac.

Also a wonderful fruit cake, made by Louise Finn a guild member, that was won by Jackie Green, who guessed the correct weight at 2.220kg.

Chocolates were won by Vicki Knights guessing ‘How many Marbles in the jar’. Afternoon tea was also served with savouries and cakes.

The fete raised £440, which included many generous donations plus money from the New Year raffle and Bring and Buy sale they held earlier.

Jadeen Lowe said: “What a wonderful amount raised. That is a fantastic outcome and reflective of the lovely event put on by the Women’s Guild and the community spirit in the village.

“It was a pleasure to share the afternoon with you all and Erin and I are so grateful you invited the hospice to be part of the day. I hope you know the difference your donation will make to local families facing life-limiting illnesses.

“The supportive care team told me about the activities that have been happening at the Long House this year and its heart-warming to hear people are able to access the support they need from the Long House again.

“Because of the wonderful amount raised and support shown by St Giles Women’s Guild, the Long House can continue to be there for those who need it.”

Guild secretary Trish Shanks added: “It is a fantastic amount for such a worthwhile local charity, especially since we haven’t had a fete for several years and the difficult times we are living in.

“A big thank you to all members, helpers and everyone who came along and supported us.”
