587 New Season Lambs, 144 Draft Ewes and Rams
Similar entry as last week a large number of lean and light lambs on offer which reflected in the overall average. The good meat lambs in keen demand and more could have been sold.
Top per kilo being 343ppk for a pen of 45.2kgs at £155 from Mark Dymond of Higher Hollick, Barnstaple. 341ppk was realised by TR Middleton of Ashreigny for a pen of 44kgs at £150.
Several vendors around the 340ppk, top per head on the day and prize for pens of 3 or more from the Bromell Family of Worden Park, Bradworthy for 2 pens of 51kgs at £166 followed by £160 from S Piper & Son of Herdwicke, Holsworthy.
Draft Ewes
Again a strong trade met by both lean and fat ewes. Top per head was £170 for a Charollais ewe from S Walker of Norton Farm, Bridgerule.
Anthony Barriball of Tinacre, Clawton won the prize for highest price (per head) for 3 or more ewes at £168 for Suffolk x. The Bromell Family of Bradworthy saw their Lleyn x ewes to £165. Mules to £164.
151 Store Lambs
A flying trade for store lamb for all sizes and breeds with several prospective buyers in attendance. Top per head being £122 for 3 pens from Mr JP Williams of Meavy, Yelverton. Numerous other pens around £112 to £116.
88 Breeding Ewes
Suffolk x mules 2T met a strengthend trade topping at £255 for 2 pens from Brian Cottle of Densfords, Petrockstowe.
395 Calves and Weaned Calves
A big show of calves for our St Peters fair which included a lot more smaller, youngers calves and trade would be slightly harder compared to recent weeks on those young mediums calves. St Peters Fair show and sale results; Best overall bull for TWB Hookway, Best Heifer for RWH Dilling.
Weaned Calves
Just a couple of pens of weaned calves which sold well again and reached £870 for a rangey pair of Blue steers in from J Bowden down from Chulmleigh which won the St Peters fair best stirk prize.
Milk Calves
A harder trade but that said still plenty of notable prices achieved with 23 over £700, 66 over £600, 80 over £500.
Top of the day was £795 given for a wonderful Charolais bull in from BD and DG Andrew, Shebbear, other Charolias bulls to £740 D Philp, Looe and £718 Marytn Heal, Torrington and £702 LJ Goaman, Hartland.
Best Blue Bulls to £738 for a cracker in from LJ Goaman followed by a fantastic run in from TWB Hookway which achieved £735 (1st Prize Champion Bull). Smart Inra 95 bulls to £700 for M Heal again, who had more at £670, £660 and £640.
Young fresh Simmental bulls to £620 for RWH Dilling, followed by Angus bulls to £640 for a super type in from AJ & PE Nancekivell, Kilkampton. Hereford Bulls topped at £650 for D & T Wildern, Newton St Petrock who had more at £590.
A single Sweet Blonde to £610 in from PH Collins, Holsworthy. Longhorn bulls sold well and sailed up to £635 in RG Denning up from Truro.
An exceptional blue heifer attained £705 (1st Prize heifer) in from RWH Dilling more to £690 AJ & JA Heard, Hartland and £680 for Collaton Farm Partnership. An eye catching red limousin heifer reached a grand £700 for TWB Hookway again.
Charolais heifers to £635 for Nick and Kate Bowden, Highhampton. Best native heifers £450-£500 with mediums around £300-£370 with very little under £250.
Dairy Sired Bulls
Fleckvieh bulls to £370 in from WE Organic, Chulmleigh followed by Friesians bull to £330 for Martyn Heal with 15 Friesian bulls averaged £223.
400 Store Cattle
Buyers from away set the trade and pushed hard with 1 buyer taking the opportunity of buying 68 cattle, driving the rest of the trade to new high levels.
Top today was £2490 for 3 cracking 27mth British Blues from Mr L Grills of Hartland, Aberdeen Angus steers from Mr KW Thorne of Hartland at £2360 (20mth) & £2280 20mth.
Other Abeerdeen Angus from Mr RJ Wade of Welcombe to £2240 & £2170 whilst 6 Aberdeen Angus steers 23mth from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son of East Putford at £2090 Charolais Steers from Mr SW Graham of Marhamchurch hit £2270 & British Blues from the same farm at £2070, other British Blues from Messrs DI & ML Wotton of Chumleigh at £2050.
The younger 16-20mth grazing types saw a huge trade, many bunches at £4 a kilo & live!! Plenty of steers & heifers between £1700-£2000.
Best of the meat heifers topped at £2390 for a 27mth British Blue from Mr L Grills of Hartland other British Blues from Mr SW Graham to £1900 & Messrs ACG Marshall of Chilsworthy to £1880(2).
Aberdeen Angus heifers from Mr RJ Wade of Welcombe at £2300 other at £2000. Aberdeen Angus heifers from KW Thorne of Hartland at £2110, £1980 for 2 Abeerdeen Angus heifers from WJ Wooldridge & Son from East Putford.
Charolais heifers topped at £2280 from Mr SW Graham. Younger 16-20mth grazing heifers saw a very strong trade and more required between £1600 - £1800.
Younger Store Cattle
A superb run of quality well farmed cattle saw vendors rewarded by one of the strongest trades we’ve seen.
Top call was £1860 for a 12mth British Blue x Friesian steer from Mr RWH Dilling of Highampton who sold younger 9mth Dairy x British Blue steers at £1510 & 8mth steers at £1380, DF & ER James of Halwill hit £1710 for a 15mth British Blue.
14mth Hereford steers from Mr D Jeffery of Kilkhampton at £1650(3) Charolais steers from Messrs ER & CF Timms of Okehampton at £1600 12mth who sold 12mth Charolais heifers at £1320(2), other 13mth Charolais steers from Messrs SJ Crocker & Son from Lewdown at £1530 & £1480, heifers from the same stable at £1580.
Single suckled Limousin from Messrs PS & KM Warren of Virginstow saw 4 12mth heifers race to £2620, others at £1520 & £1500.
The younger 7-9mth continentals very sought after a second consignment from Messrs MW & CJ Hawkings of Highampton saw 4mth steers at £1450, £1340 & £1280. Limousin heifers at £1280 & £1180, British Blue steers at £1440 & £1240 heifers to £1130.
On the whole St Peters Fair Day was a success from start to finish and more cattle are urgently required to meet this trade which is currently much stronger than the finished prices.
OTM Cows
Top was 249p for a 634kilo Limousin cow from Mr L Grills of Hartland at £1578.
