THERE was a fantastic turnout in Bude last week, to watch the valiant efforts of the Bude Firefighters complete their Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge has become a global phenomenon with many variations on the original idea. The firefighters did it big-style and it wasn't just a bucket. The crew of fifteen, aged between 21 (Jack Wellington) and 51 (Mark Blatchford) had a whole digger load of freezing cold water emptied out on them — and most still managed to smile through it. Although the crew was originally a little apprehensive about the challenge, crew member Barney Day, explained that all the firefighters were up for it as a team effort, which is what you'd expect from these local heroes who put themselves at far greater risk in their daily work. As Barney explained: "We were all happy to help and to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease." For the full report, and a round-up of the area news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
