BEEF and dairy went head to head for the title of Supreme Champion in the cattle section with beef coming out on top.
Tony, Jo and their daughter Roxi Smith from Jacobstow were overjoyed to receive supreme champion with Smithy Lacey, who has impressively won every competition she has been entered into.
Smithy Lacey is a three-year-old Limousin and was entered in the heifer with cow at foot class, both shown by Tony Smith and daughter Roxi. They worked their way up to compete for the title of supreme champion and Smithy Lacey came through victorious once again for her owners.
It was the family’s first time competing at Camelford Show and they said they thought it was ‘excellent’ and ‘well situated’.
Tony said: “She has been Supreme Champion at Stithians, Launceston, Honiton and now here. She is just over three years old and this will be her sixth show. It has been an excellent day. The judges always look for good bone structure, the way they walk, how she does with her calf — and this is her first calf so she has done very well.”
Representing the next generation of farmers was William Davey, age seven, and his beef heifer calf named Connie from Boscastle.
William received a special rosette for being the youngest handler. William said that the cow had been a bit difficult to control but he was having a good day.
Another ‘star on the rise’ was Coombe Hot Peaches, an Ayshire belonging to the Coombe family. She won breed champion but has previously been Supreme Champion at Stithians and Launceston Shows.
It was a family affair for Sharon, Brian and Evelyn Coombe who said they enjoy supporting the local shows.
Sharon said: “We try to attend all the local shows. I think it is good for the public to see the cattle and other livestock as for many it is the only time they will get to see a cow.
“We have had a wonderful day, there has been a bit of rain but nothing much compared to last year which was horrendous. These smaller local shows need support from both exhibitors and the public though if they are to continue — if you don’t support it you will lose it.”
Sharon said Coombe Hot Peaches has ‘become a bit of a celebrity’ and is following in her mother’s footsteps: “Her mother won a lot of shows and she is now following in her footsteps. We will be attending Okehampton Show tomorrow so we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”
