THE annual Launceston Half Marathon and Family Fun Run took place on Sunday July 4, and attracted over 300 entries for the half marathon from all over the region and beyond, and 200 in the family fun run.

The half marathon started at 10.30am from Coronation Park and saw the winner Kevin Heywood (Bideford AAC) return in 1hr 12.35, more than two minutes ahead of second place runner Mark Jenkin also from Bideford AAC.

The weather was kinder to the field of runners than in previous years with the tail of the field enjoying a cooling drizzle. All finishers received specially struck race medals and t-shirts as well as other items from sponsors and supporters.

1st, Kevin Heywood (Bideford AAC) 1:12.35; 2nd, Mark Jenkin (Bideford (AAC) 1.14.48; 3rd, Oliver Gibson (Newquay RR) 1.15.10.

1st female, Suzy Bosustow (Cornwall AC) 1.29.38; 2nd, Kathryn Burgess (Cornwall AC) 1.30.42; 3rd, Revis Crowle (East Cornwall Harriers) 1.32.42.

The organisers Kernow Runners wish to thank all sponsors and supporters, as well as the numerous race marshals who stood around the course to ensure the runners were safe, and St John Ambulance for their medical cover. Only three runners needed medical help from the 300+ strong field at the finish but all covered the tough 13.1 mile course, fondly known to the area as 'The Real Beast of Cornwall.'

Family Fun Run — The two mile family fun run started at 10.45am and covered the same course as in previous years. Some 200 entries were received, mainly from local schools and clubs who contend for the Cornish & Devon Post trophy for the largest group entry. All finishers received race medals at the finish.

The largest school/club entry: 1st, St Giles on the Heath School; 2nd, Tai Kwon Do Club; 3rd, Launceston Swimming Club.
