THERE was a great display of cattle at this year’s show, with a number of proud familiar faces picking up rosettes.

The husband and wife team of Tony and Jo Smith were on the winners podium at the show.

The Jacobstow team managed a first, two seconds, a champion Limousin while their cow Smithy Oasis won Interbreed Beef, and partnered a bull from the Neale family from Werrington to win the interbreed pairs.

Jo said: “We won the same thing (interbreed pairs) last year with a different animal, so it was ideal to win it again with another. It’s nice to know we’ve got more than one special animal.”

The couple have a busy summer ahead of them, having taken part in Camborne Show a week before Launceston, and now have Honiton, Okehampton, Camelford and Holsworthy shows to tackle. Jo added: “It’s nice to do the one-day shows because we want them to carry on and if people don’t show then they won’t!”

Also successful this year was Megan Wellington from St Kew, who won champion and reserve champion with her cattle.

With three animals with her that day, Megan said: “It’s probably my eighth year at the show and we try to come every year unless there’s TB. I’ve had a good year — I’ve done Royal Cornwall Show and have got Stithians, Liskeard and Camelford shows coming up.

“It’s been hot, but it’s a good show and I do really enjoy it.”

Nine-year-old Matthew Smale-Rowland definitely had a day to remember at the show.

Matthew was named Overall Holstein champion and Reserve Dairy Interbreed champion.

To round off a great day, he was also fourth in the Young Handler classes.

Matthew’s mum, Gemma Smale-Rowland, said: “It was the first time that Matthew had shown a cow on his own, so he was pretty chuffed.

“He spent a few days prior clipping and washing and then was up really early on show morning to get it ready.”
