ST Joseph’s Year 10 art, textiles and photography students had a day exploring the treasures of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter on Friday, September 30.

They were able to draw and take photographs from the wide variety of displays as part of the school’s commitment to ensuring the very best educational opportunities for all those in its care.

It is an important part of a student’s art education to have the time to look, observe, record and annotate, and to be shown these disciplines outside the classroom encourages inquisitiveness, as the students develop their confidence in making art in a range of media.

This was followed by a visit to Exeter Cathedral for the students to make further drawings, whilst experiencing the calming atmosphere the magnificent gothic building affords, and enabling them to reflect on the day’s events. The trip certainly gave the pupils the opportunity to extend their education as they prepare for their GCSEs.

Head of Art, Mrs Green, said: “A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all and I’m certainly looking forward to seeing how the students develop their ideas into a final piece of art.”

Year 10 pupil, Hattie Loe, said: “We really enjoyed the freedom to discover the museum the trip gave us, and to have the time to draw there was so good. It was fun and we were learning at the same time.”

Elspeth Crozier echoed Hattie’s thoughts. She said: “The trip allowed us to see things differently, and will make a difference to how we make our art."
