STUDENTS in Launceston got the chance to meet a European sporting champion this week, as St Stephen’s Community Academy had a visit from mini trampoline gymnast, Kirsty Way.
During her visit, Kirsty led a whole school assembly, sharing her journey and discussing what inspired her to follow her sporting dreams.
Pupils got to see videos of Kirsty in action including when landings didn’t quite go to plan.
Kirsty has already achieved great things in her career including being the second highest scorer of all time, she is the current British champion, Senior European champion and English national champion.
During her assembly, one pupil said: “Wow, I’m very proud of you!”
After the assembly, the children were put through their paces as part of a series of sponsored circuits.
A spokesperson from the school said: “Thank you to everyone who was able to sponsor this fantastic event. Not only do these visits inspire ambition in our pupils but they let them recognise that success starts from humble beginnings and hard work, dedication and a passion to be the very best you can be.
“The majority of the money raised goes towards supporting young athletes like Kirsty, some goes on the actual visit admin and the rest comes back into the school. We are planning to put the money towards a very exciting swimming project that we will tell you about when we have more information and dates have been confirmed!”
“What a fantastic morning we have had,” said headteacher Maura Furber. “The children were enthusiastic, respectful, and determined, great job team St Stephen’s.”
Before she left, Kirsty had the chance to leave a message in the school’s comment book. She wrote: “Thank you for having me at you wonderful school, fill of very talented children. I hope I’ve inspired them to follow their dreams, and maybe one day be a champion.”
