AN online petition calling for the government to implement a rule that would trigger a second EU?Referendum had secured just short of 4-million signatures as the Post went to press.
However, it is understood the House of Commons petitions committee is carrying out an investigation into the possibility that some names could be fraudulent.
The petition, available via petition.parliament.uk, now awaits a Government response and will also be considered for debate in Parliament — Parliament considers all petitions that receive more than 100,000 signature for a debate, and the Government responds to all petitions that receive more than 10,000 signatures.
In the referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union, held on Thursday, June 23, 51.9% voted in favour of leaving the EU, 48.1% voted in favour of remaining.
According to a map, linked to the petition, broken down by constituency, more than 4,000 people from North Cornwall have signed the petition.
In Torridge and West Devon, the map states more than 5,500 people have signed the petition, as the Post went to press.
The petition was created by a William Oliver Healey, and the deadline for signatures is November 25.
