ANTI-EU types,  like Nearly  OAP (Review, June 3) remind me of the old Marx brothers joke: "I refuse to join any club that will accept me as a member."

They  talk as if we have only just joined the EU  when we have  been members for over 40 years. If membership was costing us so much, surely we would be bankrupt by now?

Instead, Britain  is one of the richest countries  on earth,  our economy is one of  the fastest growing in  the western world.  The  description of a struggling country, on a par with Greece is absurd and untrue.

There are over 100  billionaires in this country and countless millionaires.  If our people feel that they are not sharing in this wealth, they should blame  our government, not EU membership or immigrants.

For every economist who thinks its a good idea to leave the EU, there are three more who take the opposite view.

As for trading with the rest of the world, we already do,  more than 50 per cent of our output is outside the EU. but we still need to be in the trading club of Europe. Doing business with the likes of Japan and the USA depends on it.

The British government believes that high levels of immigration  are a price worth paying to have a strong, thriving economy.

To them  leaving the EU is not worth the risk. They have shown this by every action they have taken. Of course, they would never admit  to this but in the run up to the referendum a little  honesty would not go amiss.     I  hope that David  Cameron faces up to his own right wing and  has  the courage to  campaign for Britain's membership of the EU.

The referendum should be sooner rather than later, as  all  this uncertainty  could be  very damaging for inward investment.
