FIREFIGHTERS were called to a serious fire at a detached bungalow in Werrington just before 3pm on Tuesday. An elderly woman was trapped in the property and it was later confirmed by police that she had died.
The initial call to the emergency services was made by a visitor to the isolated bungalow and was received at around 2.50pm.
The first two appliances were despatched from Launceston Community Fire Station and further two appliances were sent from Callington and Bude Community Fire Stations.
A water carrier, command support vehicle and breathing apparatus support vehicle also attended the scene.
On arrival, crews reported that the property was well alight with flames issuing through the roof.
Teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and the trapped lady, understood to be aged 89, was located.
As the 'Post' went to press, the fire was still ongoing but crews had the situation under control. Access to the property down a narrow lane proved difficult.
A fire investigation team was on standby to enter the property once the fire was out.
There were also concerns that there might be asbestos in the property.
Roads in the vicinity of the bungalow have been closed and the area has been cordoned off. The cause of the fire was not yet known as the 'Post' went to press in the evening.
