EGLOSKERRY Primary and their goblin 'Rapid Lines' was one of only two Cornish schools who competed in the national Gathering of Goblins event at the legendary Goodwood motor circuit in West Sussex on Sunday July 19.

Eight children from Class 3 at Egloskerry Primary were able to go thanks to the support of their parents. Congratulations to some of the youngest Cornish drivers to race at Goodwood; Caleb and Grace Forsyth, Robert Chopak, Matthew Edwards, Lewis Wosnitzka, Toby McMillan, George Bunn and Chloe Dawe.

This trip was an outstanding finale to an amazing year of enterprising learning via fundraising and sponsorship, building and racing of the Greenpower Goblin they named 'Rapid Lines'. All children had an amazing time and were very aware of the privileged opportunity that they were part of.

The day didn't go without a hitch though; after passing scrutineering with flying colours and lots of praise the team discovered that the car wouldn't start! After some tweaking and replacement of the relay component, all was well.

However the second glitch of the day was only minutes away. During the first slalom test the steering column came away from the front axle, the car lost all steering and Caleb Forsyth crashed into Goodwood's race wall! Both car and driver were fine, although a little shaken. After realigning the tracking and steering arms the car was ready to race - again! Caleb was a true racing car driver and keen to get back into the seat to finish his race.

The rest of the day was hitch-free and all the children were able to drive in at least one of the races; the slalom, driver test, chicane or drag race.

The final treat of the day was a chance to drive around the full 21/4 mile Goodwood race circuit in the 'Race of Champions'. All eight drivers' names were put in the helmet and the lucky driver picked was Chloe Dawe. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and proudly drove in the tyre tracks of many famous racing car drivers.

Huge thanks to the families who took their children up to the event and provided amazing support on the day and to Celtic Solar who provided a van for Rapid Lines to be transported to the event.

Class 3 Teacher Emma Kerr said "This is such a huge achievement for a small Cornish school as well as an important national link in our enterprising learning."

The racing was organised by Greenpower, a company which makes kit cars and organises electric car racing events for schools, colleges, apprentices and youth groups.
