MORE than 1,000 children from 13 schools including Bude, Morwenstow and Boscastle, received a special treat when four ‘Graffiti Classics’ musicians came to show how classical music can be fun.

This inspirational string quartet, comprising two violins, viola and cello, enthralled and entertained the children with popular classical pieces. The musicians played from memory so that they could dance to the music, walk about amongst the children, serenade the teachers and bring the music alive.

The enthusiasm of the children was apparent. A Year 4 pupil said: “It was the best assembly ever! The music was awesome and I’d love to hear it again.”

The music workshop has since encouraged the school to play classical music. A pupil in Year 6 said: “It was very creative and has inspired our school to do more music and listen to more music like that.”

They added: “Our favourite song was ‘Spring’, but they also played the ‘Can Can’ which was really fun and made us all laugh. It was the best musical performance ever!”

One child asked the players: “How come you are all this funny?”

The week of workshops, which is an annual event, was organised by the local charity Sound Waves South West and Music Therapy Trust (SWSW), which expressed thanks to the Wessex Youth Trust for its grant and to the contributions from the schools, all of which enabled the week to take place.

SWSW used the opportunity to promote its instrument loan scheme, which offers any school child the chance to borrow an instrument free of charge.
