CHILDREN at Shebbear Community School have produced a sculpture in the style of local artist Sandy Brown. It was part of a week of art activities for the children and included a visit by Julian Vayne of the Burton Gallery and a whole school visit to Plymouth Aquarium which helped inspire some colourful work now on display.

The school sculpture, which is now sitting proudly in the school lobby, was made by baking salt dough rings which were then carefully painted and placed on poles coming from a tree trunk base.

Headteacher, Nick Alford said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed art week.

“A recent visit to Sandy Brown gallery in Appledore inspired the children to produce this striking piece of work. I think it is so important that children have a rounded education and have the chance to both appreciate the work of different artists and produce it themselves. We are working hard to ensure our curriculum, while having maths and English at the core, allows time for the arts. I’m sure that enjoying a broad curriculum helps develop the children’s knowledge. This has been reflected in our much improved SATs results this year not least those children reaching the higher standard.”
