CORNWALL Libraries have had their best results ever across the county with children taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge.

There were 7,733 starters, and 5,409 finishers — a result of 70% finishers.

Launceston Library said it is very proud of the part it played in those figures, with 450 children taking part and a record number of 348 children completing their six book challenge.

Before the launch the library took part in seven school assemblies to tell children about the holiday challenge, as well as sending information out to 17 schools in the surrounding area.

There were children listed from 21 different schools taking part locally, as well as nine home schooled children completing their challenge and collecting more than 78 Children’s University stamps for their reading, book reviews and taking part in events.

Launceston Library held many events over the six weeks to keep children engaged, and ended off with a final party of Lego, balloons and biscuits to celebrate how well children had done.

Certificates are being printed and should reach schools shortly for their celebration assemblies.
