CULTURAL Diversity Week was celebrated from March 9 to 13 at Duchy College, Stoke Climsland, as part of a Cornwall College-wide initiative.
At Stoke Climsland, while campus bars and restaurants provided themed meals from around the world, the student community held several of their own events each day. The aim was to celebrate the variety of staff and students' backgrounds at the college itself, as well as learning about different cultures from around the world.
Activities ranged from an interactive video booth to talks by guest speakers, Greek and Cornish dancing and a world map quiz.
On Monday, special events on an Indian theme included 'Engineering in India' and 'Milk production in India,' together with an Indian meal for lunch. Later in the week, Europe, China and the Americas were celebrated.
On Wednesday, further and higher education students from Duchy College, Stoke Climsland and Wadebridge, and Cornwall College Saltash came together to attend an all-day seminar and workshop about the lives of the travelling community by Vix Jevons, a successful Foundation Degree student from the University of Plymouth who has a travelling background.
On the same day, Pathfinder students looked at their own origins, studied culture close to home and celebrated all that it means to be Cornish by flying flags, taking part in Cornish dancing and planting a living Cornish flag in their new conservation garden.
The students in the Animal Unit were also involved in Cultural Diversity Week, holding days on the theme of 'Animals/religion/food in different cultures' and 'Animals in society'.
Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "Promoting cultural diversity at Cornwall College means providing an educational experience which engages students with different cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, religions, languages and histories, and in which respect for diversity is embedded throughout the curriculum. The range of activities at each site has allowed both students and staff to raise and discuss important issues surrounding cultural awareness and diversity."
