DURING the early hours of Saturday morning (November 30) Bude’s BED Nightclub was subject to a drugs raid carried out by police officers in an attempt to crack down on drug abuse in the area.

Police said that the unannounced visit to BED Nightclub on The Strand was in part response to police intelligence which suggested Class A drugs were being supplied in and around the club.

Eight uniformed officers, supported by a small covert team, a licensing officer and passive drugs dog made entry into the premises. Several customers were searched as indicated by the drugs dog and police said a small quantity of drugs were found.

PC Phil Coop, the Bude neighbourhood beat manager, said: “The operation at BED was a pre-planned passive drugs dog operation. Its purpose was to send the message to the community that the police locally will not tolerate the misuse of drugs. It was also to reassure the public that we will take positive action to protect them.

“There has also been a rise in the number of assault related admissions to hospitals from the immediate area around the premises. A small quantity of drugs were located by police dog Jet and seized.”

A spokesperson for BED Nightclub commented: “BED Nightclub has a robust ‘no drugs’ policy in force, we may ask you for a random drugs search. We were subjected to a full drugs search. Just to remind our patrons if you want to do drugs please stay away from BED Nightclub.”
