THE final hymns have been sung and prayers read at Rexon Cross — at the last service to be held in the 153-year-old chapel.
Members decided to close the chapel due to dwindling numbers and maintainence costs.
It marks the end of a long history of community activities and celebrations.
Over the years, a number of weddings and christenings have been performed at Rexon Cross, which was built in 1860.
The first wedding held there was of Daisy Thomas, who married John Ward, of Compass. They were presented with a bible and hymn-book by the Rev French. Their daughter, Madge, and her brother were also christened at the church.
