In reply and support of Sian Thomas's letter in last week's 'Post' about the proposed demolition of Craigmore House (May 28). I have to say that I agree with all that she says and support her all of the way.
Since the Autumn of 2006 this town has benefited from a town landscape Heritage Initiative (THI), a Heritage Lottery Funded grant scheme administered by the old North Cornwall District Council, now Cornwall Council, and match funded by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Cornwall County Council (CCC) and the town council. All of these organisations were instrumental in the re-roofing of the town hall, which by coincidence was designed originally by Mr Otho Peter in the 1880's who lived at Craigmore House at one time.
The former Liberal Club on Tower St, also designed by Otho Peter, was next to complete works. The main improvements came in the form of the pedestrianisation of the Town Square, which is in close proximity to buildings that Otho Peter was involved in their design.
The THI's aims are to refurbish and re-use historic buildings within the town through grant aid. Why then, I ask, can they not do the same with Craigmore House instead of allowing it to be demolished? I therefore ask the town council to intervene to prevent the destruction of what is in no doubt a fine historical building and lies in a prominent position and can be seen clearly from Bodmin Moor.
If this building is allowed to be demolished will the developers be constructing road widening and adding pavements for the parents and school children who use that road (Windmill) to walk to school that will be needed if further housing is allowed to go ahead because of increased traffic in this area? Don't make the same mistake that was made in the 1960's that allowed many old and historical buildings to be swept away by over zealous planners, once they are gone it is too late.
I urge members of the public to sign the petition against the demolition which is in the town hall, and for the town council to implement a preservation order on Craigmore House.
Launceston.
