THIS year the North Hill Dog Show was held in memory of Jane Holden who sadly passed away from cancer.

Jane’s ability to acquire prizes, gifts and sponsors was envied far and wide and she organised the dog shows to make sure that dogs, owners and visitors alike, all enjoyed the day.

The show on September 1 was well supported with 191 entries over 16 classes. Rosettes were awarded for first, second and third, ‘pop up’ certificates, toys and goody bags as well as trophies for ‘Best Local Dog’ and introduced for the first time this year, the ‘Jane Holden Cup for Best Veteran Dog’. The agility ring did not see too many visitors and that was put down to the good food and beer that was being enjoyed in the beautiful sunshine. There was added interest with a few craft, pottery and honey stalls as well as a huge raffle with the main prize being a £200 voucher for a pet portrait.

Emma and Tina, vet nurses, judged expertly but found it difficult to chose their winners as the competition was so high. Jane’s husband John and their son was able to attend and present awards and even take part in some classes with his dog Layla.

The Jane Holden Cup for ‘best rescue/rehomed dog/bitch’ was won by Geoff Lewis from Darite with Domino, a cocker spaniel. The ‘best village/local dog/bitch cup’ was won by Martin from North Hill with Otis, a labrador boxer cross. ‘Best in show’ went to Reever, a golden retriever owned by Sue Smith.

The afternoon was filled with proud owners, well-behaved pets and lots of fun. Along with the support from the hardworking volunteers, local community and generous local businesses, a whopping £700 was raised and will be donated to Cancer Research UK.
