WHO let the dogs out? Their owners of course, who came in droves to take part in the family friendly dog show at this year’s Holsworthy & Stratton Agricultural Show.

There were big dogs, small dogs, fluffy dogs and short hair dogs and all had a great time competing for a colourful ribbon and the coveted position of ‘Best in Show’. There was a 50p entry fee per class and people were more than happy to give this as all proceeds from this year’s dog show were to be donated to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

The judge was Helen Jones from Exmouth who certainly had a hard job with so many dogs to select from.

Best in Show was the majestic Rudy, a 14 month old German Shorthaired Bracco x Italian Bracco x Springer Spaniel x Cocker Spaniel.

The Post caught up with Rudy’s owner Jan Coffin, from Milton Dameral, following his first win of best crossbreed. Jan said: “He is a mixed bag and a trifle lively today. We came along today as its a bit of a day out for him and the show if a bit of fun. Thought it would be nice to see what others thought of him and the judge seemed to like him — well enough to give him a first prize. It’s just nice to take part though and I believe the money is going to a charity which is great.”

Rudy was very well behaved in the ring, walking almost like a professional, however Jan said: “He is good on everything else except his recall is rubbish. Early we took part in the gun dog scurry and he went running off. Luckily one of my friends spotted him and was able to grab him.”

However, Rudy proved to be a firm judge favourite as he also went on to win best in show. Speaking about Rudy, dog show organiser Margaret Stacey said: “I have seen Jan at other shows. Her postman told me she has a lovely dog and after all if the postman approves!”
