A STAR of ITV’s Doc Martin, based in Port Isaac, has raised more than £2,400 for the village’s RNLI.

Doc Martin returns later in the year for its ninth series which means that Port Isaac is busy with cast and crew filming in its picturesque setting. Ian McNeice, who plays lovable Bert Large in the series is a regular supporter of Port Isaac RNLI and at this year’s annual ‘Lifeboat Service’ he presented a cheque to the station for an amazing £2,475. Ian raises the money through asking members of the public for a small donation when they request a selfie with him. He has become a regular sight in Port Isaac, often sitting on the Platt with locals and tourists.

The presentation rounded off the charity’s Lifeboat Service which gives thanks to the crew and sees the blessing of the D-Class lifeboat by Rev Dr Elizabeth Wild. The flag at the station flew at half-mast and senior helm Damien Bolton payed tribute to Ted Childs, honorary secretary to Port Isaac RNLI, who recently passed away and to the three lifeboat crew members in France who lost their lives whilst responding to a mayday from a fishing vessel on June 7.

St Minver Silver Band played some wonderful music and hymns and local singing group ‘The Gulls’ entertained the crowd with two songs. Visitors were then invited to join crew and committee for a cream tea and Doom Bar.
