SUNDAY, March 8 is International Women’s Day.

The Post is giving readers the chance to feature in an International Women’s Day special, by telling us about a woman who inspires you — it could be a friend, relative, colleague, artist, writer, TV personality or someone from history who continues to inspire you.

Tell us a bit about the woman, why they inspire you and send an appropriate photograph to accompany the report and it could be featured in the International Women’s Day special.

There are many women from across the Post area who are inspirational — one being suffragette Olive Wharry from Whitstone Head.

Olive was an avid campaigner for women’s rights and, after being sent to prison at Holloway for setting fire to a refreshment pavilion at Kew in 1913, went on hunger strike. After 32 days, Olive was released on royal warrant and returned to Whitstone.

The pavilion owners attempted to serve a writ to her, but her father, Dr Robert Wharry, prevented this and was fined £50 for contempt of court, claiming her daughter was ‘a bag of bones’ and was not fit to undergo a physical or mental trial.
