DISCUSSIONS regarding the future of Launceston’s library continue.
There is the potential for the running of Launceston’s library to be devolved to the town council.
At a meeting of Launceston Town Council on December 20, mayor Cllr Brian Hogan said: “The library is still under negotiation with Cornwall Council. Who knows what may or may not come this council’s way. It’s very much how long is a piece of string?”
He said town councillors met with Cornwall Council representatives to discuss the library, which is situated on Bounsalls Lane, on November 24, and that Cornwall Council has gone away to seek valuations on all the buildings on the site — the library, tax office and the band room — before another meeting in January.
Cllr Hogan added: “I think they were looking for an alternative building [for the library service]. I said there were none available. They also said that they might be looking to sell off the entire site. I said you don’t own the entire site because the town council actually owns the band room, which is part of that site.
“Their way forward they have decided is to get valuations on all the buildings.
“They are going to do some research before they come to the next meeting.”
A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “Both Cornwall Council and Launceston Town Council recognise how important the library and information service is to residents of Launceston and outlying parishes.
“Talks between Launceston Town Council and Cornwall Council are continuing, as both are keen to find an economically viable solution to the future delivery of the library and information service.”
