PLANS to redevelop a neglected site in Bude with new town houses, flats and shops have recently been approved.

The site on Landsdown Road and Burn View, was formally occupied by Jennings Bus Station and the first cinema in Bude, which was erected in 1922. This was closed in 1936 and was replaced by the cinema on the headland, which was subsequently demolished to make way for the supermarket.

The plans have been designed by Bude architects, Metters and Wellby Ltd with PJ Wonnacott acting as the planning consultant.

A spokesman said care with the design and materials has been taken to ensure the scheme complements Bude’s conservation area. Additionally, sustainable systems, including a rainwater harvester, will increase insulation and a block heating system, with the possibility of solar panels.

The spokesman added: “The Jennings Bus Station and old cinema site has had a variety of other uses, but the owners are now looking for a developer and this site, overlooking the golf course and adjacent to shopping facilities, will revitalise this corner of Bude.”

The plans include erecting five town houses, eleven flats and three commercial buildings. The design will keep with the trend of the street frontage of Landsdown Road and Burn View, and there will be a strong corner link for the two streets.

The plans were approved by Cornwall Council Plans Committee.
