Cornwall County Council's Road Safety Unit is appealing to members of the local community to come forward after a School Crossing Patrol site has been vacant since April.

The site, on Kings Hill in Bude, remains vacant despite hundreds of fliers being delivered in the vicinity of the site and an advert going out in the new council paper: Your Cornwall.

Cornwall County Council School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinator, Sandra Amy said: "I have found it very difficult to fill this vacancy; it is a very busy road for children to cross at this site without a patrol's assistance. I am looking for someone who is reliable and punctual who likes children and has plenty of common sense. Please contact me if you believe you could fill this role. Being a patrol is a very rewarding job."

A large banner and wooden lollipop man displaying that there is a vacancy at the site have been displayed during the duty times to no avail. Fliers have also been sent home with all pupils of the infants and juniors schools.

Parent, Mrs Sarah-Jane Streeter said: "This is a very busy road and I find it difficult to cross with four children. A School Crossing Patrol is really needed here."

Headteacher at Bude Junior School, Mike Narraway, said: "The Kings Hill crossing is very important to Bude Junior School staff and children. We would all like to have a patrol back on the site as soon as possible to help our children to cross the road safely on their way to and from school."

Duty times at the site on Kings Hill are 08.20 to 08.50 each weekday morning during term time, and 15.15 to 14.45 each afternoon.

Matt McTaggart [Lib Dem], Cornwall County Council's Executive Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, said: "Changing work patterns and lifestyles mean that recruiting patrols is becoming more of a challenge for local authorities, these people do a very valuable and rewarding job keeping children and adults safe while crossing the road, and we hope that there are people in the local community who will be keen to fill this position."

Historically Patrol sites have proved notoriously difficult to fill. In Cornwall, the Road Safety Unit has had a lot of success in the past with various methods which have failed at this site. King's Hill in Bude is particularly busy and everyone is anxious to get a patrol back on site.
