MAKING pancakes and fundraising for a national cause was the main objective of Trebullett Chapel’s special evening on Saturday.

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter. This was a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were ‘shriven’ (absolved from their sins). Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

Trebullett Chapel wanted to celebrate this with combining a beetle drive and a pancake evening to raise funds for Comic Relief, and chose Saturday, March 2 as this is the nearest Saturday to Shrove Tuesday, which took place on March 5.

The evening was a great success with over 50 adults and children competing in the beetle drive and then enjoying the delicious pancakes that Mary Tucker, Louise Trenerry and the team cooked and served up, with lots of toppings to choose from including the traditional sugar and lemon juice, chocolate spread, lemon curd, honey maple syrup and more!

A wonderful evening of laughter and companionship resulted with a total of £215 raised for Comic Relief.
