FOLLOWING recent visits, working with the team at Launceston Day Centre, Cornwall councillor for Launceston central Gemma Massey (Lib Dem) arranged a litter pick in Newport on Friday, August 4.

Day centre staff, service users and other volunteers joined Cllr Massey and Cornwall councillor for Launceston South Jade Farrington (Lib Dem) at Newport.

At a meeting in July, some of the service users at the centre expressed their concern of the lack of bins in the area around the centre and said they wanted to get involved in more community projects and initiatives, so a litter pick was discussed as an option.

Cllr Massey said: “It has been great to work so closely with the Day Centre and to see everyone come together today for the good of the local community has been brilliant.

“We collected four full bags of rubbish in just an hour, it was a shame to see such rubbish lying around but great to see all volunteers getting stuck in to make a difference.”

The volunteers dodged the rain to clear the area immediately surrounding the day centre and up to the food bank and back.

Cllr Massey added: “This morning has been a great success and we now hoping to work with the Bude Day Centre to also arrange a beach clean before the end of the summer.”
