THINGS have come a long way since weekly lunches for senior citizens began in the schoolroom of the Holsworthy Methodist Church in late 1992, writes Christine Williams.
They soon became the highlight of the week for many elderly people so it was decided to raise funds to build an extension to Holsworthy Memorial Hall, known as the manor suite, as a home for the club.
Devon Social Services agreed to help towards the cost and when the extension was completed a charity called the Holsworthy Good Neighbours Day Centre and Luncheon Club was formed.
The day centre used the suite on three days a week and the luncheon club on two days.
In those days the Day Centre catered for up to 55 clients, many of whom lived on their own and for whom a visit to the Centre provided support, company, good food and entertainment.
