VOTERS in Bude, Stratton and Poughill may shortly be given an opportunity to elect two new town councillors; one in the Bude Ward and another in the Poughill and Stratton Ward.

The notices for both elections will be published today (Thursday), with polling day, in the event of a contest, being Thursday, July 28.

Both vacancies have arisen following the disqualification of two sitting councillors for failing to attend meetings of the town council for six months.

More than ten local electors in both wards responded to notices advertising the vacancies, by writing to the deputy returning officer requesting that the vacancies be filled by election.

Anyone wishing to be a candidate in the by-election should first apply for nomination papers from the deputy returning officer at Cornwall Council, by telephoning 01579 341234.

Completed nomination papers must be delivered to the Cornwall Council Elections Office at Luxstowe House, Liskeard PL14 3DZ by 12 noon on Friday, July 1.

If more than one candidate stands in either ward, a poll will take place on Thursday, July 28.
