DAN Rogerson, the former Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, was selected unanimously as the party’s prospective candidate for North Cornwall on Monday, July 18.
He will now be among the candidates to challenge Conservative MP Scott Mann for his North Cornwall seat at the next general election.
The Liberal Democrats are prepared for the general election, having selected candidates in key seats such as North Cornwall.
Mr Rogerson said: “I am really proud to have been selected for my home constituency of North Cornwall. I look forward to working with communities and residents to get things done. My three campaign priorities will be securing more investment and jobs for north and east Cornwall, encouraging more genuinely affordable housing for local people and bringing more decision-making from Westminster and Whitehall to people in Cornwall. I will also engage with local people to listen to their concerns.”
Mr Rogerson has a strong record of standing up for local people, having previously represented the seat for ten years between 2005 and last year’s general election.
In that time, he successfully campaigned for a reduction in South West Water bills, worked with communities to protect local services such as bus routes, Camelford Leisure Centre and out-of-hours medical services in Bude, and secured funding to upgrade the A30 at Temple to dual carriageway.
Mr Rogerson said: “The Liberal Democrats are well placed to fight a general election, whenever it is held, and I am raring to go. In the last few weeks, we have signed up over 17,500 new members, a number of them here in North Cornwall.
“The Liberal Democrats made more gains than any other party in May’s local elections across the UK. We have also won all three Cornwall Council by-elections in North Cornwall this year, taking our total to an overwhelming 18 out of 21 Cornwall Councillors.”
Mr Rogerson added: “We have a new army of committed activists who will be joining me on the doorstep, making the case for a strong local campaigner who will fight for North Cornwall. We want to focus on re-building the British economy to protect jobs and services.”
