Dan Rogerson is to be congratulated for tabling his draft Government of Cornwall Bill (the 'Post', July 16). He has brought the Cornish question to the right place — Parliament — and in the correct way — primary legislation.
We should press Government to provide parliamentary time for a proper second reading debate and call on all the parties in the House of Commons to take Cornwall's case for self-determination seriously by tabling amendments that will strengthen the bill.
Mebyon Kernow would prefer a more ambitious bill leading to a National Assembly for Cornwall with powers equivalent to that of the Scottish Parliament.
MK is not convinced that the functions of local government (Cornwall Council) and regional government (Cornish Assembly) should sit with one body. We would prefer the greatest devolution of local government powers to the Cornish communities in tandem with the greatest devolution of central government powers to the National Assembly.
Nevertheless, I wish Mr Rogerson well in his endeavour.
Deputy Leader
Mebyon Kernow —
the Party for Cornwall,
Penzance.
