LAUNCESTON'S first ever group specifically for dads and male carers is being set up in the town.
Although there are activities and classes held at Launceston's Children's Centre from Monday to Friday which dads can attend, there has not been a group specifically for them.
Co-ordinator Jason Sculthorpe explained: "We trying to set up a dads' group to talk about dads' issues.
"Although we do have some dads attending the groups throughout the week there has been no specific time for them to meet on their own terms for their own reasons. It's the first time a dads group has ever met seriously.
"It's well known how important a dad's role is in the family and having support is the next step closer to being an even better dad.
"It's especially for those who aren't supported by family and maybe need a bit of friendly advice on the issues they face every day.
"We're also trying to get more people to become active in their children's early years."
The group had their first meeting at the children's centre on Monday, July 20, which around 12 people attended.
Jason said it would be down to the dads attending as to how often and even where they want to meet.
"Meetings, probably at the start, will be held at the children's centre but in the future they can choose between them where they want to meet. Once it's set up there's no reason why they can't meet at the pub, cricket club, sports centre etc," explained Jason.
He added: "The long term aim is not just about sitting in a room talking about problems, it's more an enabling group to get dads to take the first steps to start up a group and carry that group further in the future. We want it to be sustainable."
