THE second round of the cyclocross 'go – race ' series of five held by British Cycling Coach Jodi Vickery in partnership with Bude's local cycling club 'Don't Push It' took place on Saturday June 27.
The races so far have been held at Bude Junior playing field on the second Saturday of each month through to September. However, to give the children variation and more challenges other venues have been obtained. The next will be at Stratton Primary School playing field followed by a new private venue to be confirmed for August.
Each race consists of a taped off lap with obstacles to negotiate to test the skills of the children along the way in a cyclocross style race course. Riders are put into age categories from 7-16yrs and timed over a given period to complete as many laps as possible. Each rider is given points on attendance and extra points to those placing in the top three. There is a podium and presentation of prizes at each round and for the final in September medals and trophies to series top three highest points.
On race days they also run some team relays and fun games just to finish the afternoon off.
Race organiser, British Cycling go-ride coach for the South West Jodi Vickery, said "It's a fantastic opportunity for the kids and great to see youngsters racing, I wish I had had this opportunity when I was that age."
2006 Master Ladies Champion in Cross Country Mountain biking, Jodi has been competing for over a decade and enjoys passing on her knowledge and skills to the next up and coming generation.
"Who knows we could be looking at the next GB cyclocross Champ!"
She goes on to say "there are so many activities for children to take part in especially here living on the coast, however it has only been now that working for British Cycling to provide club support that a race series in cycling has been set up, it is obviously much needed as attendance has been fantastic."
The club itself thrives on its adult members committed to regular local trail and road rides, but the future of the club is in these youngsters who will hopefully be inspired to continue in the sport.
If you fancy a go then all you have to do is complete a form available from the Bude cycling club website, go – race details are also available from the British cycling website, or pop in to Don't Push it, bring a £1 along for entry, bikes and helmets are available on booking if you do not have your own.
