IT WAS a wet and foggy end to Delabole Carnival weekend, but the crowds weren’t deterred from coming out to watch a fantastic procession on Saturday evening.
The procession was led by a traction engine, owned by Mr Chris Vincent, followed by Camelford Town Band and then the beautiful swan float of the Delabole Fairy Royalty.
Many floats, bands, walkers and vehicles of all descriptions rolled on past the spectators with one of the final floats being entered by Delabole Alcohol Appreciation Society and dedicated to their dear friend ‘Fruit Bat’ who had always participated in their carnival float entries previously, but sadly passed away earlier this year.
The carnival week was proclaimed a great success by organisers, despite the soggy end! A pasty lunch for the public on Wednesday was a sellout, and the children of Delabole Primary School enjoyed their pasties on Friday after giving a performance to parents and grandparents in the carnival marquee.
The beer festival was well attended as usual and bar staff report the fewest kegs ever with beer left in them at the end of the evening, while the ladies enjoyed the Pimms also available on the evening.
Carnival beer glasses were created in memory of John Lugg, the former president of the Delabole Carnival, who passed away earlier this year. The glass’ slogan reads ‘John Lugg, A True Delabolian’.
‘Feedback Band’ provided the live music whilst food was available from Alice, Julie and Wild Bake.
There are always snags to every event and this year’s for Delabole Carnival was an exploding sound system! Fortunately, after a hasty online order and speedy delivery, all was well again without too much disruption. A good week in all, donations to charity for Wadebridge Foodbank from the United Service collection on Sunday, and also to this year’s charity for the Boscastle Buoys, Cornwall Hospice Care, after their evening of song on Tuesday, which was enjoyed by all — including the impromptu performance from one of the Fisherman’s Friends who sneaked onto the stage to join the Buoys for a number.
Delabole’s carnival next year will be on July 21, and the committee will be meeting shortly to start the process all over again, with some changes to be made following the resignation of their secretary and the retirement of three longstanding members of the committee.
