EMBARRASSING fake tan forfeits, inflatable duck costumes and training in snow and ice are some of the experiences Launceston’s Charlotte Parnall has thrown herself into as part of her preparation for the London Marathon in aid of The Children’s Society.

Charlotte Parnall (pictured), a 22-year-old international development student who went to Truro and Penwith College and is originally from Launceston, is currently studying at the University of Reading, and is aiming to fulfil her dream of crossing the finish line at this year’s London Marathon on Sunday, April 22 and hoping to raise £2,000 for vulnerable children.

The young runner, who used to go to St Joseph’s School in Launceston and then sixth form at Truro College, has completed half marathons and endurance runs like Tough Mudder in the past but never run distances like the London Marathon’s 26.2-mile course. Charlotte will be running as part of a team of almost 100 charity runners all raising vital funds towards The Children’s Society’s work with the most vulnerable children across the country suffering abuse, hardship and neglect.

Out of her £2,000 fundraising target Charlotte has managed to raise an impressive £1,871 in a number of inventive ways including asking people to sponsor her to cover herself in the most orange fake tan she could find, running as a an inflatable duck and completing the Living Below the Line challenge – living on a £1 a day for five days.

As an international development student Charlotte understands the impact society can have on vulnerable groups such as children and is passionate about supporting young people who may have had a disadvantaged start in life. Knowing the funds she raises could change children’s lives has motivated her throughout the tough training.

Reflecting on her personal experiences and determination to make a difference, Charlotte said: “The London Marathon has always been on my bucket list. Training in all weathers has been challenging at times but I’ve enjoyed all the fun ways I’ve raised money and my family and friends have been an incredible support to me.

“I chose to run for The Children’s Society because they reach out to the most vulnerable children and young people in our society who might not have a choice about the kind of lives they lead but we have a choice to help them.

“I have seen my brother complete the London Marathon and the atmosphere is amazing — I can’t wait for it to be my turn to cross that finish line!”

The Children’s Society’s supporter engagement officer, Laura Balcombe, said: “We are so grateful to Charlotte for her inspiring efforts and determination to help vulnerable children and young people. Every penny raised by Charlotte and all our marathon runners will help The Children’s Society continue to help children facing huge challenges in their lives, because no child should feel alone.”
