THERE was a positive response for the pro-EU case from market-goers in Launceston, say cross-party volunteers who were there to outline the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign.

The team of volunteers said they had an enjoyable morning on Saturday, manning a stall at the square’s Saturday market.

It was a chance for cross-party co-operation and included Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour Party supporters, who are united in their belief that Britain should remain part of the European Union.

Conservative Party supporter and volunteer Tim Smith said: “What was good about the day was that we had a lot of interest and a positive response from people in Launceston wanting to find out more about the campaign.

“A lot of people have already made up their minds, but there were several people we spoke to who are yet to decide on the issue and we were able to have discussions with them and explain why we think Britain should stay in.”

The volunteers met a wide range of people, including young voters and the young at heart and discussed issues such as EU funding for projects in Cornwall.

Mr Smith added: “We had discussions with those who are yet undecided about which way they will be voting but many of those we spoke to were aware of how important the vote was.

“We hope to hold another talk a few weeks before polling day, so around the end of May, to help those few who may still be undecided.”

The MP for North Cornwall, Scott Mann, has announced he is in favour of the UK leaving the EU, as are fellow Tory MPs Torridge and West Devon’s Geoffrey Cox and South East Cornwall’s Sheryll Murray. But Central Devon Conservative MP Mel Stride is in favour of Britain staying in the EU.

The referendum takes place on Thursday, June 23.
