LEWANNICK pupils brought their community together with a cream tea event last week, as part of ‘The Great Get Together’, a campaign of the Jo Cox Foundation.

Jo Cox MP was killed on June 16 last year, and The Great Get Together was organised to be the biggest neighbourhood celebration since the Jubilee street parties. The idea was for people to get together with their neighbours to share food and celebrate all that we hold in common.

Lewannick Primary School decided to hold its annual grandparents’ tea party on June 15 in support of this initiative, to allow pupils’ grandparents or other special, elderly members of the community to join them for an afternoon in school and enjoy looking at work and seeing what they get up to.

Headteacher Ben Towe said: “In a really sad and troubling week, defined by the events at Grenfell Tower, in North Kensington, I think it reminds us all of how important our families and communities are.

“We held our Grandparents’ Tea Party and it was wonderful to see such a large number of guests visiting our school and sharing it with their grandchildren or special young people. These are such valuable occasions and it was a lovely atmosphere.

“Of course, the event was our contribution to The Great Get Together, inspired by the Jo Cox Foundation. She was passionate about the role of communities in creating a fairer, kinder and more tolerant world.

“I’m delighted to say that we raised £147.97 from donations provided by our visitors and we will be sending this money to the Jo Cox Foundation.”
