MORE than 100 people entered their crafty and creative wares in this year’s Horticultural and Handicraft tent — and the standard was at its highest.
Members of the public could enter floral art, home grown flowers, vegetables, cooked items, homemade preserves, art, handicrafts and photographs, with children’s classes also available.
Chief steward Elaine Reynolds thanked everyone for the hard work they had put into their entries and for supporting the show.
Speaking about the quality of entries received Elaine said: “We have had some fantastic entries — the children’s photography in particular, there are some great ones in there.”
There was a new ‘Club Class’ this year, which was open to clubs and organisations. Elaine said they had four entries from different organisations and she looked forward to seeing that class grow as the years go on.
She said: “We have been overwhelmed with entries and the quality of the work has been phenomenal! We’ve had about 118 competitors but many enter more than one class so there is no telling quite how many entries we actually had.
“This section was well supported and with a super amount of quality entries. The judges were impressed with the section and enjoyed their task of judging the wonderful work and skill everyone had put into their work. We had a great show!”
There were special awards presented for the ‘President’s choice’ and one lucky winner was Sophie Cobbledick of Boscastle.
Her floral design for the ‘Pick your seat’ trophy was chosen for the special commendation and Sophie was pleased to have won.
She said: “I was pleased. I picked the brightest selection of flowers I could, so I think it stood out.”
There was strong competition in the children’s classes, but one family came out on top, receiving a whopping seven trophies between them.
Sam, Ben and Phoebe Coles, from Camelford, had big smiles on their faces as they walked up to collect their prizes.
Sam, age nine, received the trophy for most points in the cookery for the six to ten age category. He also received a first prize for his tin man but it was his first prize for jam tarts he was most pleased with.
He said: “I really wanted to win with my jam tarts.”
Phoebe, seven, continued the family’s success by receiving the trophy for most points in the handicraft for the six to ten age category.
But it was Ben, five, who stormed ahead with five trophies in all. He received trophies for the most points in the five years and under category for handicraft, art, photography and cookery. His biggest achievement was winning the ‘2019 front cover schedule’ prize for his age group, which means his picture will be used along with three others next year in the promotion of the tent!
Mum Michaela said: “They had a lot of fun making their entries and I am very proud.”
