COXY Bears, made up of the husband and wife duo of David and Marie Cox, Liam Tilley and Martin Vanstone, completed Macmillan Cancer Support’s Longest Golf Day Challenge at Trethorne on Sunday, June 23.

Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the biggest charities in the country and provide physical, emotional and financial support to help those affected live life as fully as they can.

The challenge sees four players play four rounds (72 holes) in one day without the assistance of buggies, meaning they had to walk for the duration.

Explaining how the idea came about, David said: “We saw it on Facebook, both Marie and I were new to golf and thought it was a challenge we could take on. I then asked Liam and Martin to join us and they were more than happy to do so.

“It was a 5am start so we got up at about 3.30am and it finished at just before 9pm. It rained once, but by and large the weather was quite kind.”

So how did they find it?

David said: “We had a great time doing it but about halfway through the second round I was thinking this was going to be really tough, but we then stopped for a bite to eat after the second round at 12.30, and then the second-half of the challenge was a lot easier. It’s something which could become an annual thing, it was a real laugh.”

David was keen to thank Trethorne for their support.

He said: “Macmillan advertise it on Facebook. You then approach a golf club, which three of us are members of in this case.

“Trethorne were really excited about it and booked it for us. They were really supportive and put stuff on their social media pages and website.

“So far we’ve raised about £370, but people can donate until the end of September. We’d like to thank everyone for their support so far.”
